Family Shelter Project
Shelter the Future: Transforming a nursing home into a family haven
Formerly known as Heartland Health Care Center, located at 444 W. Harrison Ave, in Decatur, IL. Unfortunately, the vacant building has been the target of severe vandalism and now there is so much work that needs to be done. Our goal is to establish a comprehensive family resource center within the building, serving as a home base for collaborating agencies and offering a full spectrum of services under one roof. This center will prioritize providing emergency shelter for families experiencing homelessness, while also connecting them with the critical support they need to achieve long-term stability.
Non-Essential Services Offered:
-
Providing Safe Haven: Our shelter will offer immediate safety and security for families facing homelessness. This allows parents to focus on their children's well-being and start planning for the future.
-
Stability and Support: Shelters provide a temporary yet stable environment where families can access basic necessities like food, clothing, and hygiene facilities. This stability allows children to continue their education with less disruption and helps parents address the root causes of their homelessness.
-
Support Services: At our shelter we will offer additional services like job training, financial counseling, and childcare assistance. These programs empower families to achieve self-sufficiency and transition into permanent housing.
